The problem with the tramel method is how do you reliably place its tip in the kerf made by the blade which may be 1/8" or 3/32" wide?

Don't sweat the initial placement, it is a waste of time. I just use a square to get it close, use a screw to anchor one end and clamp the other. Then I use the five cut method to get it spot on before I glue the other end. Once the glue sets I add a screw to that end as well. On my adjustable fence sled, one end pivots and the other has a zero stop. I locate the zero stop using the 5 cut method also.
