Re: OT: Solar Power anyone????

I have not done it, but recently stopped by a company calling themselves Off Grid and talked to them about it. They suggested a 6 Kw system. Said they would arrange for a meter similar to the one you mentioned. Total cost would be $24,000. Since my electric bill is less than $150/mo on the average I am still wondering f this is a good deal.

Several things bothered me. The company looked a little "fragile" to me. Just a woman sitting in an over sized building on the side of the road waiting for stragglers to stumble in. I seriously doubt they will last as long as the system. (Who will honor whatever warranty when that operation folds?)

It bothered me that their name was Off Grid when in fact it was essential you be on the grid to have someone to sell the power to and to buy it from when your system falls short. No backup during a power failure. Power failures here seem to occur during fowl overcast weather and at night.

And I wonder if the system will ever pay for itself. How long do these things last? Do they degrade over time?

I asked them about a solar thermal water heater and they were dismissive. The only one they had was $9,000. I had a homemade one years ago that cost $200 and provided 40% of my water. I would have thought I could do a lot with $9000.
