When we lived in Upstate NY we also had an 8KWH generator and the appropriate electrical hook up. It was more than sufficient to power the critical appliances. If I were to have the need again, I would do it the same way. The down sides are that the generator should be run monthly, IIRC and you do need to keep fresh gasoline available. However, I would see these inconveniences as preferable to a $20K tab for a whole house solution. FWIW
