Re: Curly Arbutus (Madrone) Dining table

I probably would have used the plywood on the bottom, with 1/2" mdf, or considering the properties of this wood, industrial PB on top of that to veneer onto.

But let me state, I have never used any of that wood. However, I recall from back when seeing Christian Bruchard's fantastic thin walled hollow turnings, which took on wonderful distorted shapes, I recall studying the properties. I think I recall it has about the highest ratio between tangential / radial contraction of any domestic wood plus pretty high strength numbers in the other aspects. I was hoping to find something growing in my area that would do that. The closest thing I recall was Shagbark Hickory, but I've never seen a burl on one, nor gotten my hands on any of that even.

However those guys out West who use this wood all the time, probably do this all the time, and never have a problem with it.
