I do pretty much the same as what Bill does. It doesn't matter to me if my tops are shiny, what is important is that they slide smoothly and wax does this really well and is cheap. I won't sand my tops I see no reason to go that far and stains don't bother me at all. So the most aggressive I get is 0000 steel wool.
