Subject:
made in the USA-somewhat OT

Paul Blackwell
Since moving into our new digs, we find ourselves in the market for new furniture since many of our old pieces don't seem to fit the new surroundings. We looked in one store noted for good quality pieces, and when I asked the salesman where the wood pieces were made, He replied that the pieces were manufactured in China and the finish work was done here. He said it was difficult to find any furniture made in the US. It totally turned me off, and we looked elsewhere. We found that one line of wood pieces is made in West Virginia, a manufacturer called Gat Creek. The pieces are beautifully crafted, somewhat more expensive than imports, but we ordered a sideboard in cherry. The pieces are not made on an assembly line, but are crafted by a single individual from start to finish. He even sends you a postcard with a picture of him building your piece. We took delivery on Saturday, and it was well worth the wait. The piece is signed by the craftsman, and is absolutely beautiful. We have selected a company located in our old hometown of Newark, NY for the upholstered pieces. They are a family owned business started in 1899, and still build beautiful furniture. Look for the name Halligan if you want good quality, made in the USA, furniture.
