Re: White Oak or Black Locust for Outdoor Frames?

Larry Clinton At Frankfort, (Central) Indiana
I like working with locust, in this area it is quite a bit cheaper than Oak - The only issue I have had is that my supplier does not separate the "Honey Locust" from the Black. I have read that they are both great for outside use but the old timers (including me) favor the Black. I have used it to make a vanity for my son's remodeled bathroom. IMHO, it turned out very pretty - and I am sure it will outlast the house! Either should work well but in my opinion the Black Locust will outlast White Oak. When I was young my Uncles farm was fenced with Oak (cut from the farm woods) while a few miles away neighbors had Locust - As I remember the Locust lasted a few more years. The farmers in my home area used to say a Locust post would outlast at least 2 postholes.
