I often read comments similar to yours about not having design skills. It is very common for woodworkers to spend a small fortune on tools and equipment and even on classes and workshops to acquire the skills to use those tools, along with classes in veneer or inlay or haow to make a “X” style chair. What I seldom hear is any reference to woodworkers taking the time to acquire any design skills.
There are a few community colleges that have furniture programs, and many of those have several courses on design. Even if you’re local community college doesn’t offer a furniture program they most likely offer courses in 2 and 3 dimensional design, color theory, drawing, and sculpture courses. All of these will help the burgeoning designer develop some good useful skills.
