I like the Shaker style because it pares down the adornment until only what is necessary is left. The function of the piece designates it's form, which leads to a beauty of simplicity. When I design a piece using this parameter it allows the wood to stand out, to be the sole decoration.

I spend a fair amount of time designing a piece, using CAD, to get the proportions right and make sure it will function properly.

The amount of creativity you have depends a bit on DNA, but a great deal is determined in childhood. Television and ornate toys tend to squash creativity. Children who read books and play with things like scrap wood blocks, pretending they are trucks or houses etc. develop a greater imagination and thus greater creativity as adults. Sure, there are exceptions to this rule, but I'm sticking by it.
