I understand, John, but I am not an experienced turner...just do what is needed for the project i am working on at the present time. But, with that many turnings for 6 chairs x 14 turnings, I just thought it would be nice to have this tool. I saw it done by Tom Silva on This Old House many yrs ago when he was working on a stairway.
Anyway, I am going to buy a piece of 3/16"x1 1/2" x 36" angle and use my diamond cutoff blade and bench grinder. Aim to make the individual designs on it, and make sure it is the correct length for the turnings without having bumping problems when it descends. I still have the duplicator on the Shopsmith, but this is a new idea I had. The duplicator works fine, but at times it also causes problems....have to make sure the speed of the lathe is correct. They say to use "C" for rough turning, "H" for medium, and "N" for final burnishing.
