Can't remember the last time I followed a printed plan. I do look at magazine plans closely though and almost always pick up a neat feature or method that I will "borrow" for a future project.
BTW, can remember the last time I followed a cookbook recipe closely either.
Carol hit it on the head when she said the "Why" is what's important. I think most of us make a piece to fit a particular space, so we will change the dimensions. Usually the important stuff is that piece A must be exactly the same length as piece B or this assembly really needs to be square.
