MOOSE RUNNING This latest automation features a wildlife theme. SHOP OWNER: Charles Mak LOCATION: Calgary, Alberta, Canada This summer my woodworking activity took a mechanical twist, as many of my woodworking undertakings were related to automata making or kinetic art - a mechanically oriented form of woodcraft. In addition to leading a couple beginner workshops on making automata, I also designed a new automation with a wildlife theme. The new piece is called "Moose Running". To give the piece a more nature-like look, I used scraps salvaged from an old pallet for the base. Bears and humans are the main predators of the moose, and to reflect that I designed a bear-shaped crank handle meant to be driven by a human hand.
