A Clock From Another Time
A grandmother's old time piece inspired the design of this new cherry mantle clock.

This is a mantel clock that I recently completed. The inspiration for this clock comes from one that belonged to my grandmother. I always loved listening to the Westminster chimes. My cousin inherited the clock, so I was able to get some pictures of it from him.
The case is made of solid cherry with a natural finish, whereas the original is made of laminated woods with a dark lacquer finish. The front and back are ¼ inch cherry. The 1/8 inch top was steam bent to shape and the end pieces were cut and hand carved from 8/4 stock. For the finish, I applied five coats of wipe on polyurethane and one coat of paste wax.
The clockworks are mechanical, not electronic. I wanted the authentic chimes, not an electronic simulation. I don't know who the maker of the original was, but I have never seen a clock of this style anywhere else. Most mantle clocks I have seen are either the taller square type, or the more curved top Napoleon Hat style.. . . Ed Miller
