STARTIN' 'EM YOUNG

SHOP OWNER: Ellis Walentine
LOCATION: Coopersburg, PA

My partner, Pimo, recently volunteered to host a show-and-tell at our shop for his daughter's day-care classmates. On the appointed day, fourteen pre-schoolers and their teachers showed up for the festivities.
Pimo showed samples of about 50 kinds of wood, as well as a variety of wooden objects, such as furniture, toys and musical instruments.
But the highlight of the morning was the "hands-on" part of the program. In an hour, the kids built two dandy "fire palaces" from miscellaneous scraps--and about a quart of yellow glue.
Who knows? Maybe we kindled a spark in some of these youngsters, and they'll grow up to be the woodworkers of tomorrow.
