Pat Edwards' Marquetry "Center Table"
"This center table is a creation of mine, with a marquetry top and
"Biedermeier" style base. The base is solid tulip poplar (8 sides)
which is veneered with French walnut. There is a large bolt which goes
through the base and is attached to a nut welded to a 1/4" steel plate
laminated into the center core of the top. The top is made of sawn
veneers and bone which is about 1.5 mm thick. The background for the
top is a single book-matched flitch of French walnut. I cut out the
decorative areas and made the marquetry panels and reset them back into
the top with boxwood inlay to cover the seams. The four identical
panels with the birds were sawn at the same time. The butterfly center
was cut alone. The eight floral designs on the edge molding were all
cut at the same time.
