The competition:
Turn a vessel and decorate it. A vessel is defined as a hollow form, with or without a lid, with an opening smaller than its major diameter. Open bowls are not eligible.
    The vessel must have been decorated after turning, by any creative method you wish, including but not limited to carving, piercing, woodburning (pyrography), sandblasting, dyeing, painting, inlay work and other decorative techniques. Mixed media may be used in the decoration process. Segmented vessels are not eligible unless they are further decorated after turning.
    Remember, this is a turning competition. Entries must have been turned on a lathe prior to decoration and evidence of turning must be obvious.

Eligibility:
Only amateur woodworkers are eligible to enter this contest. An amateur, for contest purposes, is someone who makes less than 25% of his or her income from the sale of their work, teaching and/or demonstrating woodturning.

Judging criteria:
Entries will be judged on the basis of design and craftsmanship. Design considerations include function (if there is an intended function, which there need not be), overall appearance, originality, materials selection and engineering. Craftsmanship is all about how well the piece is turned, decorated and finished: turning skills evidenced, excellence of decorative techniques, and the application of appropriate and well-executed finishes. The judges decisions will be final.

To Enter:
A minimum of three photos are required, but not more than five per entry are allowed. Our online entry form allows you to include descriptions for each of your photos. Please tell us anything about the conception or creation of your piece that will be informative to the judges in their deliberations.

Entry fee:
The fee to enter this contest is $15.00, payable online at time of entry, by credit card or PayPal. Limit: One entry per contestant.

Timeline:
The deadline for entries is August 15, 2006. Winners will be announced as soon as possible after the deadline date, but no later than September 15, 2006.

The prizes:
The following prizes, provided by Craft Supplies, will be awarded at the judges' discretion:
  • 1st Place - $500 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate
  • 2nd Place - $250 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate
  • 3rd Place - $100 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate
  • Semi-Finalists (up to 10) - $25 Craft Supplies Gift Certificate

  • John Jordan is a internationally recognized turner whose carved and textured hollow vessels in many private and museum collections. He also manufactures his own line of lathe tools.
  • Jacques Vesery is a well-known turner from Maine, known for the decorative carving and painting on his vessels.
  • Clay Foster is a turner, demonstrator and sculptor who lives and works in north Texas.

    How to enter:
    This is strictly an online competition. All entries must be made via your web browser on our online contest entry page. No mailed entries will be accepted. Limit one entry per contestant.

    Before you enter, we suggest you have the following information ready:
  • your contact information (name, address, phone number and e-mail address)
  • dimensions of your entry
  • list of materials used
  • at least three (3) digital photos of the finished piece from however many angles you think need to be seen, along with any shots of the turning or decoration process that will help the judges appreciate your technique better
  • text descriptions to go with the photos
  • credit card number or PayPal account

    Images must be in JPG (JPEG), GIF, TIF (TIFF) or BMP format, with a maximum file size of 10Mb. Don't worry about the physical size (in pixels) of the images; our software will size them automatically for judging and display to the public.

    Your descriptions should explain how you made the piece, including any design notes or other information that will help to inform the judges' decisions. Don't forget to mention any hidden attributes or special features that may not be visible from the photos.

    After you have composed your entry, you will be able to preview it and make adjustments if necessary, but once you have submitted your entry and paid the entry fee, no further editing will be allowed. If you have any trouble at any stage of the entry process, please contact the webmaster.

    Contest rules:
  • Entry must be the sole work of the entrant and may not have been entered in any previous WoodCentral contests.
  • We would prefer that you create your entry in response to the challenge of this contest, but pieces completed within the past 12 months are eligible.
  • Wood must be the primary medium and the use of the lathe must be obvious.

  • Contest promoters and/or sponsors are not responsible for late, incomplete or misdirected entries.
  • Limit: One entry per person.

    Announcement of winners:
    Names of the winners, photos of their entries, and judges' comments will be posted at www.WoodCentral.com as soon as possible after the judging is completed, or no later than September 15, 2006.
